Durban policeman dies in training exercise tragedy

2016-01-20 16:20

Durban – A Durban police officer was accidentally killed during an exercise at a shooting range in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday morning, police said.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said the incident took place at 10:00 on Wednesday morning.

"The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment where he passed away whilst in theatre. A case of culpable homicide will be investigated by detectives at Mountain Rise," said Naicker, adding that the police were not in a position to comment further as the investigation was in its early stages.

According to police sources who cannot be named, the officer was apparently part of a group attending a shooting course at a facility in Pietermaritzburg.

It is believed that while in the classroom, during a mock demonstration, one officer discharged his weapon, striking a colleague in the chest.
