Durban – A street vendor was killed and another person seriously injured after a minibus taxi drove through a palisade fence and smashed into the wall of an auto parts store on North Coast Road in the north of Durban on Friday.

An eyewitness and employee at the shop, Julian Moodley, was enjoying the morning sun when he noticed the taxi lose control.

"I was telling a female vendor, who was not far away from the other vendor that died, what a good day today is. She and I [were still] speaking, when suddenly I heard a bang. The taxi smashed into him, came through the fence and hit the wall," he told News24.

"The taxi guy then ran away. He was a youngster. He had no injuries at all. It was a shocking thing to see."

Another witness, who did not want to be named, said taxi drivers on the road were generally reckless.

"While some of the guys are safe, others just don't care. And there are a lot of them that have a blatant disregard."

EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said several people were injured. The Department of Health's Emergency Services helicopter landed on the scene to airlift one of the patients to hospital.
