Durban - A Durban surfer on a fundraising drive to attend a national competition resorted to the unorthodox method of auctioning off her sister for a dinner date - all on Facebook.

Holly Blindell, of Hillcrest, resorted to this method of crowd-funding after a surprise inclusion in the KwaZulu-Natal longboarding team.

She listed an advert on a buy and swop group with a picture of her 26-year-old sister, Melissa Blindell.

The funding will help her and three other team members attend the competition in Mossel Bay.

After several days of bidding and online bartering, Melissa scored a date with a mystery man who paid R2 500.

"I am very new to longboarding and I didn’t think I had made the team. I arrived home one night and found out I was in and then it was like, holy shit, how are we going to pay for this tournament," she told News24.

"My sister and I sat at the dinner table to brainstorm how we would fund it. We thought raffles and even begging at the robots, and then she actually suggested auctioning off a one-time dinner date," Blindell added.

"She says now, dependent on who it is, it might be more than a one-time thing. Perhaps if he’s really fetching and she likes him."

Blindell said that after listing her sister as an item up for grabs, the post gained serious traction online.

"I have had lots of donations and people who have come forward. It’s been great," she said.
