Durban - The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal announced on Wednesday that it will hold its highly contested eThekwini regional conference at the Greyville Racecourse on Saturday.

“The conference will see delegates electing a new leadership that will, amongst other tasks, ensure that the eThekwini Region becomes a force to be reckoned with in the 2016 Local Government Elections,” ANC spokesperson Sicelo Khuzwayo said.

News24 earlier reported that eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo is likely to face his opponent Councillor Zandile Gumede as the pair once again battle for the highly contested eThekwini regional chairmanship position.

The conference, which was initially held in February, was declared null and void in March after disgruntled members disputed the outcome of the conference.

Nxumalo won the elections by 253 votes, while Gumede got 212. Shortly after the conference was held it emerged that three branches - 16, 30 and 74, which had not being properly audited - had been allowed to participate in the elections despite warnings from ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe.

At the time it was alleged that the three branches swayed the votes to favour Nxumalo.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala told News24: “All branches that passed the audit will participate in the elections on Saturday. The status of those three branches that were of concern is an internal matter that the organisation is dealing with.”

Zikalala added that anything could happen on the day of the elections.
