East London - A 48-year-old man has been arrested for the rape of a 76-year-old neighbour in Willowvale, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

The elderly grandmother was raped on Thursday, June 16, in Msendo Village, police spokesperson Jackson Manatha said.

She was woken up by someone strangling her around 21:00, police said.

When the grandmother tried to call for help, the man kept on strangling her, and then he raped her.

After raping her, the man switched on the light.

"It was at that stage that the victim identified the suspect, as he is her neighbour," Manatha said.

The suspect was arrested on Monday and would appear in the Willowvale Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
