A man convicted of murdering an elderly woman and her two grandchildren, was sentenced to four life terms in prison on Tuesday in the Willowvale Regional Court near Idutywa in the Eastern Cape.

Xola Gogotya, 29, was found guilty of three counts of murder, two counts of rape, two counts of housebreaking, arson and kidnapping.

"On November 29, 2015, the accused raped his 34-year-old relative at Matolweni Location in Willowvale," police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said.

He was released on bail in the rape case an almost a year later, while out on bail, Gogotya broke into the home of 80-year-old Nothamalisi Sikhuma.

"He then murdered the granny, accusing her of witchcraft. He also murdered her grandchildren, aged eight and eleven," said Manatha.

He raped a 34-year-old woman who was present at the time.

Gogotya then set the house alight and dragged the 34-year-old woman to his home, where he raped her again.

"He fell asleep after raping the victim. It was at that stage that the victim managed to run away and reported all the crimes to the Willowvale Police Station," said Manatha.

The Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) tracked Gogotya down and arrested him.

Eastern Cape provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga praised the Butterworth FCS Unit team for their swift action.

Ntshinga condemned the brutal murders of the grandmother and her grandchildren, as well as the rape of the 34-year-old woman.
