An 85-year-old woman was shot dead while sleeping in her rondavel in Vininda village in Dutywa in the Eastern Cape on Friday night.

Police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, the woman was alone when she was ambushed and shot in her upper body.

Relatives found her body the following morning.

Kinana said the motive for the murder was unknown.

Commenting on the murder, provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga said: "The perpetrators of this heinous crime do not deserve to live among the people. They must face justice for their actions and ultimately be sent to prison."
