Durban – EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu has poked fun at other parties which "failed" to fill up venues during their election manifesto launches.

Shivambu was speaking at the Bellhaven Memorial Centre in Durban on Monday, where he met with eThekwini regional branches and councillor candidates.

He told the gathering that party leader Julius Malema would be addressing a mini rally in the eThekwini region on May 29.

"We call it the mini rally because in the EFF anything below 40 000 is a mini rally. Our gatherings are bigger than that, we do not organise mini rallies to launch manifestos.

"There has only been one rally in South Africa this year and it was at the Orlando Stadium. The rest were mini activities," he said.

"In Port Elizabeth, they had a mini rally and worse in Rand Stadium, those people wearing blue clothes had a very small rally. We were the only ones who respect the people of South Africa."

Shivambu was referring to the ANC’s failure to fill up the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium during its manifesto launch last month. The party, which was anticipating 100 000 people, failed to fill the 46 000-seater stadium.

The DA also launched its manifesto last month.

* The EFF managed to fill up the Orlando Stadium in Soweto during its manifesto launch.
