An elderly woman and a baby girl were killed in two separate fires in Cape Town on Wednesday.

City of Cape Town fire services spokesperson Theo Layne said the woman burnt to death in Green Point after a fire broke out at her house in a complex in Merriman Road.

The cause of the blaze, which broke out at about 12:40, was undetermined and the scene was handed over to police for further investigation.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed an inquest docket was opened.

The exact age of the victim had not yet been determined.

In a separate incident, an 8-month-old baby died in a fire in Pine Road, Woodstock, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Layne said one Wendy house was destroyed by the blaze, and the infant sustained fatal burns.

Traut confirmed that an inquest docket had been registered.
