Electoral court to hear bid to halt Tlokwe by-election

2016-02-23 11:55

Johannesburg - Independent candidates have approached the Electoral Court in a bid to postpone Wednesday's by-elections in Tlokwe, North West.

The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said the matter would be heard in Johannesburg at 14:00 on Tuesday.

The candidates want the Electoral Court to help interpret a Constitutional Court ruling setting aside previous by-elections, IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela said.

"On the basis of explaining the Constitutional Court ruling, they are also asking for a postponement of the by-elections," she said.

The by-elections, scheduled for Wednesday, were being held following last year’s Constitutional Court judgment setting aside the previous by-elections conducted on September 12, 2013 in Ward 18, and on December 10, 2013 in Wards one, four, 11, 12, 13, and 20. The court ordered that they be re-run.

Bapela said the IEC was opposing the independent candidates' application.

As things stood the by-elections were going ahead, she said.
