Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal senior police official on Wednesday praised authorities after one of KwaMashu’s most wanted criminals was arrested.

In a statement, police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the 36-year-old man was also linked to a police killing in Gingindlovu in November 2015.

Police made the arrest on Tuesday night in an operation that included the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, the Special Task Force and the police K-9 Unit.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said the suspect was found in possession of three AK47 rifles, two 9mm pistols, three AK47 magazines, four 9mm magazines, and more than 350 live rounds of ammunition for various firearms. He added that the man's 28-year-old girlfriend was also arrested.

Ngobeni said the man had "remained elusive" for a long time.

"We are pleased with the persistence of various units that have been on his trail. We once again urge communities not to harbor these criminals.

"The fact that he was armed to his teeth is an indication of how dangerous he is," she said.
