Mpumalanga – An Mpumalanga man who has allegedly repeatedly assaulted his grandmother and stolen her pension money has escaped from custody, police said on Thursday.

Sabelo Mhlanga, 22, made a run for it while three officers were leading him from the Matsulu courthouse to a police van on Monday, Sergeant Gerald Sedibe said.

He leapt over a 1.6m fence and escaped.

"His grandmother had taken out a restraining order against him on August 23, after he had unlawfully entered her house for the umpteenth time, stole her money and beat her. Two days later he returned and did the very same thing. He was arrested by the police on the very same day," said Sedibe.

He was charged with assault and contravening a protection order. He appeared in the Matsulu Magistrate’s Court on August 27. The case was postponed to December 14. On Monday, the case was postponed to January 7 for a bail application.

Mhlanga’s grandmother, Ester Mbazima, 79, said she was living in fear after learning of his escape.
