Durban – A man escaped from the holding cells of the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday - only to charge into the courtroom and strip naked while court was in session, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said the man, who was making his first appearance in court on charges of malicious damage to property, escaped from Court D's holding cells.

Mfaku said the naked man then rapidly moved to the court bench and positioned himself in full view of the public gallery.

He then allegedly attempted to violently damage the court's microphones and speakers.

The police restrained and apprehended him.

Mfaku said the man was remanded in custody and would be referred to and assessed by the district surgeon.

"The accused appeared not to be mentally stable as he was saying things that did not make any sense," said Mfaku.
