Durban – An eThekwini ANC councillor was shot and killed at the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi on Saturday night, KwaZulu-Natal community safety MEC, Willies Mchunu, said on Sunday.

Mchunu said details of Zodwa Sibiya’s death were still unclear but he urged police to work around the clock to bring her killers to book.

“We are really shocked at this callous murder and urge anyone who might have information as to who is responsible for this to immediately contact the police and those in authority,” Mchunu said.

Last week the KZN executive council directed a special task team to work with hostel dwellers and the authorities to resolve ongoing conflicts, the MEC said.

“Already our teams are active on the ground at the hostel working frantically to once again bring the warring factions to [the] table and restart the stalled peace talks,” said Mchunu.

News24 reported on Saturday that a 27-year-old man was was in critical condition after he was shot on Saturday morning. The shooting came just days after after police top brass visited KwaMashu Hostel where six people were reportedly shot and killed execution style.
