Durban – More than 220 new, returning councillors and all office bearers are expected to be sworn onto the eThekwini Metropolitan council on Tuesday, the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department said on Monday.

A new mayor is also expected to be elected during the inaugural sitting expected to take place at 10:00, which will be officiated by Cogta.

KwaZulu-Natal Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said: "The importance of eThekwini metro for our provincial economy cannot be overstated and only a well governed metro can attract investors and contribute to job creation on the necessary scale. The newly elected metropolitan council will need to start work on day one."

The African National Congress won the metro, with of 56.01% of the votes and 126 seats, while the Democratic Alliance received 26.92% and 61 seats.

This was followed by the Inkatha Freedom Party, with 4.2% and 10 seats, and the Economic Freedom Party, with 3.44% and eight seats.

The ANC’s mayoral candidate, Zandile Gumede, is seen as the most likely one to take over from outgoing Mayor James Nxumalo.

The DA’s Athol Trollip was elected as mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay and the DA’s Solly Msimanga as mayor of the City of Tshwane.

The process of electing a new City of Johannesburg mayor was still in progress.
