Pretoria - A 59-year-old former police officer was arrested on Friday for the unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

One of these weapons was a shotgun.

According to police spokesperson Constable Petunia Chabangu, the man was also in possession of three bulletproof jackets, three blue lights used by police vehicles, ammunition for a single rifle as well as ammunition for other firearms.

The man, believed to have been a warrant officer based in Pretoria West, is said to have resigned in December 2014.

He was arrested after being served with a protection order by Rietgat police officers in Pretoria. The girlfriend of the suspect accompanied the officers when they served the protection order.

"The protection order stated that the man must be disarmed and he was asked to produce his firearm licence which was invalid," Chabangu said in a statement.

"Police also searched the house of the suspect and found the property belonging to police."

The man is due to appear in the Shoshanguve Magistrate's Court.
