Pietermaritzburg - Get your “furbabies”, family and friends to Hilton College on July 10 for the SPCA 1 000 Paws Walk and a day lined up with fun-filled activities.

The 1 000 Paws Walk for SPCA, a fundraising initiative for the Pietermaritzburg, Howick and Mooi River SPCAs, promises an exciting day for the whole family while raising funds for animal welfare.

“As an NGO, the SPCA relies completely on public funding. These events allow us to raise funds while allowing the public to see the SPCA in a new and modern format,” said Pietermaritzburg SPCA public relations officer Previn Padayachee.

“The event, which is growing year after year, has become a regional event where people from all walks of life can come together and celebrate animals and the organisation,” said Padayachee.

“This year Pietermaritzburg SPCA turns 110 years old, and every year we’re trying to grow stronger and fundraise in ways that encourage good family values and include pets — big and small.”

The 1 000 Paws Walk for SPCA has a jam-packed programme that takes place from 8 am to 1 pm, and includes arena events, skydiving displays, entertainment for kids, a flea market, food stalls, prizes to be won, and a performance by Matthew Gardiner, who was a contestant on Idols SA.

Registration for the walk, with your pets, opens at 7.30 am. The walk commences at 8 am with two options – two kilometres and four kilometres – around Hilton College.

Two enjoyable competitions are also on the line-up: a dog and owner look-alike contest and the Best SPCA Dog competition.

The dog and owner look-alike contest is a costume competition, where owners dress up and accessorise their pets to match their look for the day. “This is becoming a trend and we are encouraging it with this competition, while recognising pets as being part of the family,” said Padayachee.

“We encourage adoption rather than buying a dog from a shop. The Best SPCA Dog competition can be entered by people who have previously adopted dogs from the SPCA,” he added.

Entry to the 1000 Paws Walk for SPCA is R40 per adult, R10 per pet, and children under 12 years old enter free. For inquiries contact Tess at 076 301 4827.
