Bloemfontein – A Facebook page called Boere in Nood (Farmers in Distress) has collected more than R240 000 for animal feed.

The group was created in early November in an effort to assist drought-stricken farmers.

According to the founder of the group, Free State businessman NC Schoombee, they have managed to assist farmers across the country with animal feed.

"The current drought has hit a lot of farmers hard, and we just wanted to assist them with feed," Schoombee said.

He said he became motivated to start the group when he came across dead and ill livestock on a nearby farm.

"We believe that most farmers are far from the big cities and we are just trying to assist them and their livestock during the current drought."

Schoombee said they had received enormous donations from the public.

"Eastern Cape farmers and trucking companies across the country have thus far donated about R700 000 worth of value of feed and transport cost to farmers in the Free State, North West, Northern Cape and Limpopo.

"After this week, we are expecting to have hit a million worth of value of feed," he said.

He also added that they had about 40 loads of livestock feed that need to be moved from the Eastern Cape to Bloemfontein.

"We want to keep this going, even if the drought is over, we should keep donating feed for livestock."

Schoombee said farmers who needed help could visit their Facebook page. He also asked for more donations from the public.
