Pietermaritzburg - Police are questioning several suspects in connection with the brutal vigilante-style murder of a 22-year-old Edendale man.

The attack left the man’s family devastated and with many questions, but they said they have resolved to leave the matter in the hands of police.

The enraged family of Senzo Mncwabe, who died after being attacked by a crowd of men, believes police will arrest the killers before his burial this weekend.

Mcwabe, who was a student at the Umgungundlovu TVET College’s Edendale campus, sustained severe head injuries during the attack.

It is alleged that a group of men were interrogating Mncwabe in connection with stolen goods belonging to one of them when the attack occurred.

Umgungundlovu South Police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokosize Ngobese said a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was initially opened at Plessislaer police station, before it was changed to murder.

He said no arrests have been made.

The family said the arrest of the men who killed their son will give them short-term closure.

Balungi Mncwane, a family member who is also a friend of one of the alleged attackers, said she never imagined someone who was once welcomed into the family would ever do such a horrendous deed. “We were shocked when we learned who was part of the attack that landed our son in a critical condition in hospital,” said Balungi.

“If there was no law in this country, we would have handled this matter on our own. There is no human being that deserves to die like that,” said another member of the family, Bongekile.

Balungi said the alleged perpetrators continue to live as if nothing had ever happened. “They pass here every day and they never came to apologise to us. The motive is clear. They just wanted to kill him.”
