Cape Town – The man accused of the brutal murder of a young woman in Bredasdorp will apply for bail next month, an NPA official said on Monday.

Delvigo Ward, 20, appeared in the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning for allegedly killing Sulnita Manho, 22.

It emerged that he was admitted to Stikland mental health hospital in Bellville on October 13 last year, National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said.

"His family sent him and the court would like the State to obtain a report on why he was sent there."

Ntabazalila said a doctor who examined Ward had found him fit to stand trial.

He faces a murder charge, but more charges were likely to be added as the investigation continued and the post mortem report was finalized, Ntabazalila said.

Manho’s body was found at the lime works in the rural Overberg town last Saturday morning, Western Cape police said.

She had apparently been at a local pub with friends when a man offered to walk her back to her farm outside Bredasdorp, said Napier CPF member and councillor Evelyn Sauls.

"There was a rope on her neck. She was raped and a bottle was put in her private parts. The person took a brick and hit her on the head," Sauls said.

Ward would appear in court for a formal bail application on 10 May. The State would oppose bail.

According to Ntabazalila, Ward had a previous conviction of theft and had been sent to a juvenile court. It was not immediately clear what sentence was imposed at the time.
