Johannesburg - Police have launched a manhunt for a 21-year-old man who abducted his 1-month-old baby in Mayfair, Johannesburg, earlier this week.

Mostafa Makhlouf, an Egyptian national, abducted his daughter around 16:00 on Monday afternoon.

Captain Xoli Mbele said the man had visited the baby at the house where she was staying with her mother.

Mbele said the man took the child, got into his gold Peugeot 206, and sped off.

"He bumped the grandmother of the child that tried to stop him from fleeing. Fortunately, she only suffered minor injuries and was discharged from hospital the same day," he said.

Mbele said the father might flee the country with the baby.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Johannesburg Central Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit Constable Matshata on 083 438 8475.
