KwaZulu-Natal – A father and child burned to death when three cars collided with a truck, causing a massive blaze on the N3 highway 20km from Harrismith in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday evening.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said their paramedics arrived at the scene and found that a car and the truck were engulfed in flames with the driver of the car and a baby still trapped in the wreckage. The father and the baby were trapped in the car and died.

Botha said the mother miraculously escaped from the blaze but was seriously injured, a female from one of the other vehicles escaped with minor injuries.

The accident occurred when one car veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another car and then hit the truck and another vehicle, Netcare 911 said.

Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the injured before transporting them to a hospital in Harrismith. The roadway is currently closed in all directions for further investigation.
