Johannesburg - The man who allegedly slit the throats of his two children and stabbed and wounded their mother is believed to have killed himself, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

"We suspect that it may be suicide, but we are waiting for the post mortem results," spokesperson Tshekiso Mofokeng said.

The 22-year-old man's body was found in a house in Phomolong, Tembisa, east of Johannesburg, on Thursday morning. People living in the house called police when they found the body.

The man allegedly slit the throats of his 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, and stabbed their 20-year-old mother in the upper body on Wednesday night. She was still in a serious condition in hospital.

An inquest docket had been opened.

Police had linked the man to all three crimes.

The attacks took place in a different house to the one in which the man was found, Mofokeng said.
