Fatigue thought to be behind ANC supporters' bus crash

Free State - The bus accident that left scores of ANC supporters dead on Sunday as they were returning home after the party's election manifesto launch in Port Elizabeth, was possibly caused by driver fatigue.

Initially it was believed that 10 people died in the accident, but ER24 has since confirmed that nine passengers have died.

According to a statement by the Free State MEC for Health, Benny Malakoane, the bus was travelling from Port Elizabeth, where supporters joined the launch at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium, to Ekurhuleni.

The bus overturned between Winburg and Ventersburg.

"Fatigue is suspected to be the main possible cause of the accident as all tyres are found to be intact," the Free State Department of Health said in a statement on their Facebook page.

"The driver is not divulging any info about the cause. However, fatigue is strongly suspected as the bus went off the road and rolled."

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said that paramedics found a bus lying on its roof a short distance away from the main road when they arrived at the scene.

Meiring said that it is believed that some people are still trapped underneath the bus.

"Paramedics are on the scene treating the patients and transporting them to various hospitals for urgent treatment."

ANC national spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa, said in a statement that the party was saddened by the news of the accident.

"The ANC is still clarifying details about the accident and will issue further details once all pertinent information has been verified. Our thoughts are with the injured and bereaved at this time."
