Durban - The owner of the truck which ploughed into a number of fully laden taxis in Fields Hill, Pinetown, in 2013, leaving 24 people dead, made a brief appearance in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Gregory Govender, of Sagekal Logistics, is facing charges of contravention of the National Road Traffic Act, as well as contravention of the Immigration Act.
His truck, driven by Swazi national Sanele May, barrelled into a busy intersection in Fields Hill after the brakes failed.
May is currently serving an eight-year sentence for culpable homicide.
Govender’s business woes were made public last year when Wozani Berg Gasoline (Pty) Ltd sought relief from the courts to have his company settle their R1m debt.
The company’s assets were attached by the sheriff of the court and Govender told the Daily News that, after the accident, no one wanted to do business with him.
Govender was released on a warning and is due back in court on August 12.
