Pietermaritzburg - The cause of a fire that started at the Engen garage across from Woodburn Stadium is being investigated by the Msunduzi Fire Department.

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen of the Barcelo’s restaurant operating at the garage.

Engen garage owner John Freeguard said the manager and staff were cleaning the kitchen at about 6 am yesterday when they noticed smoke coming out of the chimney.

“It looks like the fire started in the kitchen, but the cause and where the fire started is still being investigated,” he said. “The garage had another fire about five years ago and had to be rebuilt. Our staff have since been trained in basic fire safety skills that prevented this fire from spreading.

“As soon as they saw the smoke, the staff switched off all the gas and electricity, and then met at the safety point outside the garage.”

Msunduzi Fire Department divisional officer Godfrey Mchunu said the department was called out at 6.30 am yesterday.

“The fire was most intense on the roof of the garage, but there is smoke damage to the inside of the shop.

“The firefighters spent 20 minutes dousing the flames as the fire was difficult to get to,” he said.

Freeguard said he was thankful to the police and the fire department for arriving so “quickly” and dousing the flames in such a short space of time.

“Although the shop will be closed for a few days while we clean up, the petrol pumps will still be working as they were not damaged in the fire,” he said.
