Durban – A fire station and school office were burnt and police cars damaged in Folweni, near Durban, on Monday night, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said on Tuesday that reports of a police station being attacked were false.

“Ten suspects were arrested and charged with public violence. They will appear in court soon. The situation is quiet today," she said.

The violence apparently started because of what ANC provincial spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli said was a “discrepancy” which resulted in 40 names being excluded from a list of branch members. It was "deeply regrettable" that people had become violent.

“The contention has been correction of this discrepancy. Some are arguing that this was unjustified. This development was reported to province by eThekwini.

“Matters put before leadership are still under consideration. Not sure why people have taken to the streets when we have yet to decide on the matter," he said.

The ANC's provincial leadership had asked its eThekwini region to pay closer attention to developments in Folweni.
