Johannesburg - A fisherman who was attacked by a crocodile at the Komatipoort dam on Tuesday has been airlifted to a Johannesburg hospital, paramedics said.

A helicopter was dispatched to Nelspruit on Wednesday to airlift the man from a local hospital, Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said.

“The man was attacked by a crocodile while fishing at Komatipoort dam on Tuesday afternoon.”

He sustained severe injuries.

Mathe said he was trying to get the fish out of the water when the crocodile grabbed the fish and his arm. The man was believed to be in his fifties.

He was taken to Milpark Hospital, which had a trauma unit able to deal with such injuries.
