Potchefstroom - A North West woman who collapsed after five children burnt to death in her shack while she was at a tavern, was still in hospital, police said on Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear whether all the children, aged between 3 and 16, were hers.

She had left six children in her dwelling in Ramatlabama, near Mahikeng, to go drinking on Saturday night, said Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, neighbours called firefighters when they noticed the shack was ablaze.

Neighbours saved one child. The others were burnt beyond recognition. The woman was found at the tavern. She collapsed when she arrived at the scene and was taken to hospital.

She would be charged with child neglect as soon as she was discharged.
