Cape Town – Five people were been killed in two accidents near Newcastle on Saturday, paramedics said.

The accidents were three kilometres apart on the N11 in Ngagane, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

In the first accident, four people were killed when a truck and a car collided.

"Three people were found with fatal injuries trapped inside the light motor vehicle. A fourth person was found in the back of the vehicle in a critical condition," he said.

The trapped passenger was freed with the help of the fire department, and died on the scene after their condition deteriorated.

The truck driver was not injured.

In a separate accident on the same stretch of road, an elderly man was ejected from his car, which was found lying on its roof in a ditch next to the highway.

He was declared dead at the scene.

The causes of both accidents are unknown, Vermaak said.
