Cape Town – A five-year-old boy is in a serious condition after he and four others were caught in a shooting incident outside a shop in Steenberg, on Friday afternoon.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the shooting incident occurred when an unknown number of gunmen drove past and opened fire.

"The five-year-old boy was in a serious condition, while the remaining four had sustained minor to moderate injuries," Meiring added.

"Paramedics assessed the patients and found that five [people], aged between five and 20, had sustained numerous gunshot wounds," he said.

He said all five people were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

Police were on the scene for further investigation.
