Pietermaritzburg - Protests in Edendale, over the ANC candidate for the upcoming local government elections, flared up again on Wednesday night.

The protesters, part of the disgruntled group opposed to the party’s ward 12 candidate Siboniso Majola, blockaded the road with burning tyres.

A bus that had stopped at the barricade was set alight.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said two gun-wielding protesters forced the driver of the bus to drive into the burning tyres.

“The driver and the suspects managed to jump out of the burning bus. No arrests or injuries had been reported.

“Charges of public violence, malicious damage to property and armed robbery are being investigated by Plessislaer SAPS,” he said.

Traffic had to be diverted as the protesters had blocked both sections of the road.

The protest is believed to have been triggered by the appearance of election posters with Majola’s face at the weekend.

“It is insensitive of the ANC to put up posters of the candidate that was not chosen by the people,” said one of the protesters, who asked not to be named.

“Some people have decided to leave the party because of gate keeping. This is dividing the ANC,” he said.

Protests in the area started at the beginning of the ANC’s tumultuous councillor candidate nominations process.

Disgruntled ANC members said their unhappiness stemmed from a branch general meeting at which Majola had emerged as the favoured councillor.

Both the factions in the area had previously confirmed that police had to be called after the meeting descended into a brawl.

The allegations have been denied by both Majola and ANC regional secretary Mzi Zuma.

Meanwhile, Zuma said the ANC had visited all their branches in KZN in the Moses Mabhida region to explain how they had arrived at the ward candidates who were selected.
