A foetus has been found dumped in a bin in Durban on Tuesday morning, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala told News24 that the lifeless body was found at around 08:15 on West Street, near Field Street, after residents from the area informed authorities.

A case of concealment of birth is being investigated and a search for the mother, whose identity is still unknown, is underway, Gwala said.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said paramedics arrived on the scene to find South African Police Service and metro police officers.

"The baby was assessed by advanced life support paramedics who then declared the baby deceased," Jamieson said.
