Johannesburg - A former government official was held at gunpoint by a gang of robbers who had followed him from the OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday morning.

Professor Job Mokgoro, the former Director General of the North West Province, told News24 that he had been on a business trip to Australia.

Mokgoro sits on the board of the Road Traffic Infringement Agency and had been attending a course abroad on road safety.

“I was arriving from Australia this morning just after 05:00 and I had some forex on me which I went to change back to rands.

“I had a premonition that these guys may spot me at the bank and indeed this was so. When I got into the cab I kept watching the rear view mirror.

“Lo and behold when we got to the complex where I live there was a sudden loud noise and I looked out and there was a guy with a gun pointing the barrel at me and another man holding the driver up at gunpoint,” Mokgoro said.

He said that the men took everything of value from him, including his changed cash, luggage and cellphone.

“There have been four sets of police [officers] that have come to take a statement and they all say it is not advisable to make transactions at the airport,” he said.

“There should be warning signs to brief people on this if they [police] have noted these trends. We should see some type of effort to caution the public. I have been a victim today and I owe it to society to make sure it shouldn’t happen to the next person,” he said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publishing.
