Fourth suspect in court for Gauteng cop's murder

2016-01-04 17:22

Pretoria - A fourth suspect has appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court in connection with the murder of Captain Kenneth Poortman.

The 25-year-old man appeared briefly in court on Monday, before the matter was postponed.

"The matter was remanded until tomorrow [Tuesday] for bail application and further investigations," police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

Steven Meda faces charges of kidnapping, robbery with aggravated circumstances, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The matter was joined with that of three men - Sipho Alfred Tlou, Thabo Mampa and Themba Mbowane - who appeared last week.

The four allegedly hijacked Poortman in the CBD and stabbed him several times in the upper body.

They dumped his body along the Mabopane highway. They allegedly took his service pistol and his car. They were later recovered when the three were arrested in Winterveld.

All four men are expected to appear back in court on Tuesday.
