Cape Town - A wagon with five wheels.

This is the first thought that comes to mind when you see the extra limb on this ox, reports Netwerk24.

Jannie van der Westhuizen, buyer for Beefmaster, bought the ox with five legs on Wednesday for R8 500 at Vleissentraal’s auction in Bloemfontein.

"No, it was very strange. I’ve never seen something like it," he said.

According to him, the ox’s body is perfectly normal.

"It's just the extra leg sitting behind his neck. Like a fifth wheel on the wagon. All his other legs are normal. The leg looks as if it is sewn (to his neck)."

Boetie Ferreira, the previous owner, said he had bought the ox from a man in Thaba Nchu.

"The ox was born like that. So I wanted to buy it, because it was something funny," he said.

Ferreira decided to sell the ox because he couldn’t do anything with it.

"I feed and feed him, but he’s not like the cows who will give calves. He just costs me money."

Therefore, Van der Westhuizen bought him for the meat.

"It's a very nice, fat ox. So, it's for the meat. But I feel kind of uneasy about butchering him because it's such a unique animal. But what else can you do with him?"

Dr Werner Hamming, veterinarian at the Langenhoven Park Animal Clinic in Bloemfontein, says it is a phenomenon that rarely occurs.

"This usually happens during the formation of the embryo in the womb," he said.

"It may be possible that there may have been a calf in the womb that died. But it is not at all life threatening."
