Free State ANC restores calm in Hennenman after councillor dispute

2016-05-10 13:35

Bloemfontein – The Free State ANC has restored calm in Hennenman after a violent protest over councillor candidates, it said on Tuesday.

"We are happy that emotions have been toned down. The community will be given an opportunity to select their own councillor without any disruptions," said provincial spokesperson Thabo Meeko.

There had been allegations that the party wanted to impose its councillors on residents during the August 3 local government elections.

At least two branches in Hennenman were reportedly unhappy with the selection of councillors.

On Sunday, party leaders met members in Hennenman to address conflicts about the nominations and to stop infighting.

"We condemn the violence, especially if it was perpetuated by members of the ANC. We have gone a long way to minimise the tension between the two branches."

On Friday, April 22, police arrested eight people for public violence in the area during a protest over the candidates.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane said residents had blocked the R70 in the town on the Thursday night, preventing children from getting to school the next morning. Police used water cannons to disperse the protesters.
