Bloemfontein – The Free State Department of Education has dismissed allegations that they will not meet textbook and stationery requirements for all grades in 2016 due to financial mismanagement.

According to spokesperson Howard Ndaba, the department was “confident” that they would be able to deliver”.

“We are confident that we will meet all the requirements, and we are ready for next year,” said Ndaba.

“The allegations are not true, and we won’t dwell on them because for now we are trying to make sure that exams run smoothly... and come January, we will deliver textbooks and other learning materials,” he said.

Meanwhile, the DA shadow minister for education, Mariette Pittaway, said in a statement there were allegations that the department was in need of almost R100m.

“It appears that MEC Makgoe is trying his best to hide the truth from the people of the Free State and through his reckless action, is playing a dangerous game with the education of our learners," said Pittaway.

“The DA will place all outstanding written questions submitted to MEC Tate Makgoe this year on the order paper for oral reply for the next sitting of the legislature."
