Bloemfontein – A Free State mother has admitted to killing her one-year-old son after she felt incapable of taking care of his needs, police said on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old woman allegedly suffocated her son with a pillow on Monday morning in Greenfields, Smithfield, said police spokesperson Sergeant Yanga Ngcukana.

"The suspect alleges she was tired of always asking for food... and she was not coping raising the child alone," said Ngcukana.

"She then informed her mother that the baby was not moving and she subsequently informed the police. On further interrogation by the mother, she confessed that she had killed the baby by suffocating him with a pillow because the family [was] not helping with the child and she is struggling to feed him."

The woman would appear in the Smithfield Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of murder.
