Bloemfontein – About 15 pupils were expelled from Taung High School in Rosendal, the Free State, for being too old.

"There is a progression policy that says pupils can't stay in the same grade for more than two years. However some of them have failed more than twice," Free State education department spokesperson Howard Ndaba said.

The pupils were aged between 18 and 23. Some of them had been caught smoking dagga at school, while others had been absent for 20% of the school year.

The department said it supported principal Ramakgethe Sempe's decision.

The Congress of the People's student movement however claimed the pupils were expelled because they did not share the same political views as the principal's wife, who was apparently running for councillor in the upcoming municipal elections.
