Bloemfontein – A 36-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Bethlehem High Court for rape and robbery, Free State police said on Thursday.

Lieutenant Zweli Mohobeleli said Nnani April Mofokeng was sentenced to two life terms and 15 years imprisonment for the crimes he had committed since 2010.

In January 2010, Mofokeng raped a 15-year-old girl while her mother looked on. He also stole their cellphone.

In August 2010, Mofokeng and his accomplice robbed and raped a 24-year-old woman, took her cellphone and fled the scene.

Again in December 2013, he robbed and raped a 20-year-old woman near a cemetery in Bohlokong in Bethlehem.

"We hope that putting people like Mofokeng away will remove this open space from our list of hotspots," said provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe.
