Free State – A holiday resort in Ventersburg in the Free State, where 87 people suffered from food poisoning, was on Friday declared safe by the provincial health department.

The department concluded after conducting tests that the ailment could have been caused by the way in which the food was prepared, rather than as a result of contamination, department spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said.

Paramedics tended to 87 people attending a workshop at Aldam Holiday Resort last week. They complained of severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Eighteen patients were taken to Bongani and Katleho hospitals. A doctor was flown in to help.

Mvambi said the department performed an environmental health assessment and laboratory tests on the resort's food, kitchen, and water.

“Aldam resort is cleared as safe for people to prepare and eat the food. All 87 workshop participants are well, eating well and continuing with their business,” Mvambi said.
