Bloemfontein – A Free State reverend has died after he was shot twice in the upper body by a group of armed men who demanded money during a fake roadblock, police said on Tuesday.

According to Lieutenant Malebo Khosana, the incident happened at Odendaalsrus on Saturday evening.

Motlalepule Leseba, 52, died on Monday evening after he was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

"It is alleged that Leseba and his son were stopped in Odendaalsrus road by what looked to them like a police roadblock," said Khosana.

The men demanded money from the reverend and his son. The suspects shot the cleric twice and fled with two cellphones. His son was not injured.

A case of murder was opened. No arrests had been made yet.
