Bloemfontein – A Free State woman found buried alive in a shallow grave was still in a critical condition in hospital, police said on Thursday.

The 32-year-old woman was struggling to speak and had serious head and facial injuries, Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said.

She was found in Mabolela, in QwaQwa, on Sunday morning and appeared to have been beaten with stones. She was last seen leaving a tavern with an unidentified man on Saturday evening.

There were no indications of sexual assault.

Police had determined that she did not have parents and was living with her younger brother.

A case of attempted murder was being investigated and no arrests had been made yet.

Anyone who knew what happened to her was asked to contact police.
