Bloemfontein – A 23-year-old woman has been sentenced to an effective 10 years in prison for the murder of her toddler niece.

She was also convicted of four counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to three years on each of the counts.

The sentences would run concurrently.

The National Prosecuting Authority said Julia Mabine, from Mphatlalatsane Village in Phuthaditjhaba, was sentenced for murdering her sister’s three-year-old daughter by poisoning her on November 15, 2015.

"According to evidence presented in the Harrismith High Court, the accused moved in with her sister Aletta Moloi and her brother-in-law Lethola Moloi on November 14, 2013. Aletta and Lethola had three children aged four, three and one," said regional spokesperson Phaladi Shuping.

"On the day of the incident, the accused asked some teenagers, [who] were helping Aletta to clean the windows, where she could buy rat poison. The teenagers advised her to go to the industrial area."

Mabine prepared food that she served to her sister’s three children. Aletta Moloi and Lethola Moloi were served the same food later that day.

Shuping said, in the early hours of November 16, 2015, the four-year-old child became severely ill.

"She suffered from severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting," he said.

A few hours later, the three-year-old and her one-year-old sister also became ill.

The three-year-old girl was later declared dead. The other two children were admitted to hospital.

"Traces of the same poison were found in the systems of the parents and their other two children. The accused told a neighbour that she was responsible for the poisoning of her relatives. The neighbour reported the matter to Aletta who informed the police and the accused was arrested," said Shuping.
