Bloemfontein – A Free State woman has had to identify the charred remains of her son, who was found dead behind a Welkom shopping mall, police said on Thursday.

Residents found Lebohang Kase, 19, behind the mall at Freedom Square in Thabong, Welkom, on Sunday morning, Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane said.

She had been away on a church trip and positively identified him at a state mortuary on Monday.

His friends told her that it might be her son. His body was covered in burns from the neck down.

A case of murder was opened. Anyone with information about the crime was asked to contact Warrant Officer Mandla Mtileni at 072 858 3925 or the crime stop number 08600 10111.
