Friday's weather: Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and flooding ahead

Severe thunderstorms are expected over the extreme south-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, says the South African Weather Service

A special weather advisory has been issued  by the South African Weather Service for heavy rain and flooding over the Garden Route, Overberg district and Breede River Valley in the Western Cape on Sunday into Monday. Strong to gale force south-easterly winds are also expected along the south and south-western coastal areas.

The weather in your region

It will be partly cloudy and warm in Gauteng with isolated showers and thundershowers. The expected UVB sunburn index is moderate.

In Mpumalanga there will be morning fog patches on the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm, but hot in the Lowveld. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected, except in the east.

Morning fog patches on the escarpment can also be expected in Limpopo, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south.

It will be fine and hot in the North West, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with isolated showers and thundershowers, while remaining warm in the east.

In the west of the Free State, temperatures will be hot, otherwise fine and warm, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the extreme west.

Morning fog patches are expected along the Northern Cape coast where it will be cloudy and cool otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot but fine to very hot in the west. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected in the east and south. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly to southerly. 

In the Western Cape it will be fine and warm in the west, otherwise partly cloudy and cool, but cloudy along the south coast and adjacent interior with rain and showers. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected over the north-eastern interior from the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-easterly to easterly along the south coast. The expected UVB sunburn index is very high.

It will be cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers in the Eastern Cape, but widespread south of the escarpment. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south westerly.

In KwaZulu-Natal, cloudy and warm conditions can be expected, but cool in the south-west. Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected but isolated in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be gently southerly to south-easterly north of Richard's Bay, otherwise moderate to fresh south-westerly. The expected UVB sunburn index is high.
