Cape Town - A gang escaped with cash when they blew up an ATM at an Athlone petrol station on Thursday morning, police said.

The bombing took place in Thornton Road, Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.

"They fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. A case is under investigation and no one has been arrested as yet," she said.

Also in the early hours, two suspects used a tool in an attempt to steal from an ATM in Wynberg.

Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said the ATM in Main Road was damaged around 04:00.

"They fled the scene empty-handed. No explosive device was used," he said.
