Polokwane – Violence between rival gangs in Dan village, east of Polokwane, has locals living in fear.

Community leaders told News24 on Wednesday that they knew of two rival gangsters living in the area. Nobody dared point them out to police because their trust in the authorities had faded.

Freedom Nukeri and Joel Nkgapele, allegedly members of a gang calling itself Boko Haram, were killed allegedly by members of the Sankhiyo group on Sunday. The murders were apparently committed during a fight over territory.

Locals said they saw a running gun battle in the streets.

On Wednesday, residents held talks with Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha and provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba to end the violence in the area.

Mathabatha said they agreed with police management that gangsterism had to be eliminated.

"We must deploy all our forces in the area and ensure that there is no gangsterism in Limpopo," said Mathabatha. He called it a "rare and strange phenomenon".

Boko Haram started terrorising residents in 2010.

Community Policing Forum member, Nicholas Shingange, said police could not stop the violence. The police’s tactical response team and the army had to be called in.

"The situation here is beyond Ritavi police station’s capacity. They must bring the TRT for full two weeks.

"No one is afraid of Ritavi SAPS. They stone their vehicles. But bring these guys [army and TRT] you will see a dog running," he said.
