Durban – A brazen jewellery store robbery saw suspects open fire at the popular Gateway Mall on Wednesday, police said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Shooz Magudulela said three men entered the jewellery store at 09:30.

“They opened fire and took two boxes of jewellery and fled the scene in their grey BMW. The vehicle was later found abandoned at a construction site. It was established that it was hijacked in Berea on June 20, 2016. No injuries were sustained by the employees.”

Magudulela said no were arrests made, but police were still searching for the suspects. Magudulela added that police “did not know where the getaway vehicle was parked at this stage”.

He did not reveal the name of the jewellery store.

A case of business robbery has been opened at Durban North police station for investigation.
